Overview

Ship Recycling is a multifaceted process involving the dismantling of out of service/ end of life ships for the purpose of reusing or recycling their components. This eco-friendly practice helps conserve resources and reduce environmental impact. The process typically takes place in specialized facilities such as dismantling yards, dry docks, or piers.

The ship recycling process comprises several key stages. Initially, all equipment, machinery, and hazardous materials are removed from the vessel. Subsequently, the ship is carefully cut into sections using advanced cutting torches, plasma cutters, and other machinery. The dismantled sections are then sorted and processed. Valuable materials like Steel, Aluminium, and Copper are extracted and prepared for recycling, while other materials are handled according to environmental regulations.

The recovered materials are sent to recycling plants where they are melted down and reformed into new products. This significantly reduces the demand for natural resources and minimizes energy consumption compared to conventional manufacturing methods. Ship Recycling also aids in the proper disposal of hazardous substances, promoting environmental safety.

Countries like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan are major players in Ship Recycling due to factors like lower labour costs and suitable coastal geography.

Ship Recycling offers economic benefits and resource efficiency. Significant changes have been made in the industry to ensure safe working conditions and environmental protection.
